thought regarding ash wednesday

as a kid, ash wednesday creeped me out b/c it involved smudging stuff on my forehead that -- despite what anyone told me -- was made up of human ashes.

today whilst walking in downtown i saw a woman with a smear of ash on her forehead that vaguely resembled what may have been a cross. and it was easy to tell that she had probably wiped it a bit on accident without realizing it, and it now looked like she had found a leaky black marker, held it for a while, and then wiped the hair from her forehead, resulting in the smudge.

maybe it was the mom in me (albeit the athiest mom) but i just wanted to put some spit on a kleenex and wipe it off of her.

me to stranger:
oh, you got some stuff on your forehead, let me just get that for you...

Yep, saw that yesterday while I was shopping. I'm not hip to all the reasons they do it, but to me, I've always felt it was a little "show-offy" about their religion, and that's something that I just don't like, my personal beliefs aside.
