west wing

okay, who here likes the show "the west wing?"
(i await a comment)
dustin asked me if i thought that the CIA funds this show, jokingly, of course, but also that he thinks that because the show simply exists, it seems like blatant propaganda.
so i'm wondering if:
1. did this show exist before 9/11? it did, didn't it?
2. am i being snowed by blatant propaganda, or am i simply attracted to the show by the witty, fast-paced dialogue?
any thoughts, anyone?

your country thanks you, and i thank you.

It's definitely liberal propaganda. It presents issues in a one-sided fashion -- portraying the other side as stupid and ignorant. That said, I feel a bit safer with that than right wing propaganda portraying itself as "news" like Fox does. I used to love The West Wing, but now I'm convinced it's only adding to the stereotype of the elitist left.

Maybe I'm a freak, but I kinda think Allison Janney is kinda hot. As far as politics go, it stars Martin Sheen. If been able to afford DeNiro or Pacino or at least Harrison Ford.

...or even Grover. Who wouldn't love a furry blue president?

I heart the west wing! and I disagree vehemently about the propaganda issue. Liberal and leftist, yes. But propaganda? This is a fictional television drama, people, and is presented as such. No one is fooled into thinking that Martin Sheen is secretly the president, or should be, or is anything but an actor on a fictional television drama. Does it present issues from only one perspective? Who gives a shit? Everything else does, too, and if you don't happen to agree with that perspective (or just don't find the antics of Allison Janney and Rob Lowe entertaining enough) you are free to watch whatever other fictional television drama floats yer boat.

Also, Kari: Yes, it was on long before 9/11. It was better, then- old reruns are noticeably MORE liberal than newer ones. Plus Aaron Sorkin quit writing it at some point and the quality of the snappy dialogue suffered. Still, I'd rather live in a fantasy world where snotty liberal elitists run things with hearts and consciences than in our crappy reality where snotty conservative elitists are in a madcap, worldwide power grab with no discernable morals or ethics whatsoever.

but maybe that's just me.
